Rohith Vemula: The student who died for Dalit rights

This article, written by Omer Farooq and published on the BBC News website, tells the tragic story of Rohith Vemula.

Rohith was a Dalit, which is the label for those who fall outside the Hindu caste system in India. They are traditionally considered as untouchable and suffer from discrimination and marginalisation. While studying for a PhD at Hyderabad Central University, Rohith killed himself in a final act of desperation and protest at the treatment he and fellow students had received at the University.
